Natural Gas Expansion Bills Head to State House Committee

The State House Energy and Technology Committee today discussed legislation that could change the way you heat your home.

The three bill package would make it easier for natural gas companies to expand.

It’s estimated 200,000 households and companies could make the switch from fuel energy sources like propane, to natural gas.

The bills come after a long, cold and expensive winter that saw propane allocations and rising costs.

DTE was at today’s hearing, and the company says this expansion would take place in rural communities who are just short of their pipelines.

Propane company KalGas Propane says this could impact business, but some customers might not like added fees of a switch to a new energy source.

Discussions are still in the preliminary stages at this time, and we have provided more information on House Bill 5555, 5556, and 5557.

9&10’s Marisa McKay and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson spoke to DTE and a local propane supplier to learn more about what these bills could mean for the area.
