Future of “The Wex” No Longer Uncertain

The fate of a northern Michigan recreation center decided tonight.

The Wexford County Civic Center’s future is no longer in doubt.

County commissioners approved a contract tonight with a new group to take over operating The Wex.

Last year, the county determined they didn’t have enough money to fund The Wex.

A volunteer group then stepped up to the plate, and tonight the decision was made that they will officially take over.

“Our contract with rink management expires midnight tonight, so if we don’t have one in place now we have no one running The Wex tomorrow,” explained Leslie Housler, the chairman for the Wexford County Board of Commissioners.

Luckily, a decision was made in less than an hour, well before the clock struck twelve. It’s a decision that ends many months of uncertainty.

“I’m just glad that we got the contract passed with a local group that is going to try very hard to make this thing successful for Wexford County.”

Despite skepticism from some county commissioners at the special meeting…

“I’ve dealt with this Wex for 12 years, so it’s hard to be confident with the history it has,” said Housler.

The group, Boon Sports Management, is relieved they can now officially take over.

“I think that the board was just making sure that certain things were covered that they felt were important. I think once we talked through all the things that were important to them and important to us, we’re covered in the agreement one way or another,” said Mike Figiliomeni, a member of Civic Center Management and Boon Sports Management.

So what’s next for The Wex?

“We’ve got a lot of work to do with the facilities, there’s a lot of cleaning that has to be done, a lot of painting that has to be done, a lot of promotion that has to be done in the next 3 or 4 months, and then we’re going to hit the busy season again. We’re very, very happy that it’s going to be here for the foreseeable future.”

The county commissioners did discuss the possibility of a recreational millage to help fund The Wex in the future.
