AG Schuette, DEQ Requesting Details On Enbridge Pipeline

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and the director of the Department of Environmental Quality are pressing Enbridge for more information on pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac.

The two pipelines were laid across the Straits more than 60 years ago.

Now, the pair wants detailed information on the status of those lines to be sure there’s no risk of a spill or pipeline failure.

Enbridge has 60 days to report back on the pipeline’s life expectancy, pipeline use, preventive maintenance, and spill response plans.

“We have a responsibility to practice good stewardship of the Great Lakes, the crown jewels of Michigan’s ecology and economy,” said Schuette. “The unique location of these pipelines, in the straits, means failure is not an option. This request is part of a comprehensive approach to ensure we work aggressively to minimize risks and protect the lakes at every turn.”
