Tigers trade LHP Jose Alvarez for SS Andrew Romine

The Detroit Tigers got some shortstop help Friday by acquiring Andrew Romine from the Los Angeles Angels in a trade.

The Tigers gave up left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarez.

Romine may be part of a platoon at shortstop trying to replace Jose Iglesias.  Iglesias will start the season on the disabled list with stress fractures in both of his shins.

Alvarez went 1-5 with a 5.82 ERA in 16 games for the Tigers in 2013.

Romine has a .250 average and a .573 OPS in 152 at-bats in the majors.
