Homeless Man Accused Of Stealing Donation Jar Money At Leelanau Co. Business
A Leelanau County man has been arrested for taking money from a donation jar at a Solon Township business.
The 57-year-old man is accused of taking money from a donation jar meant to raise funds for an ill Glen Lake student.
A Leelanau Deputy arrived at the business to investigate. They spoke with employees who said the man was acting suspiciously while standing near the check out.
Police reviewed surveillance video and saw the man taking money from the jar. The man then paid for items with the cash and left. He was seen backing his white minivan into a parked car before driving off.
Another deputy stopped a white minivan in Bingham Township. The driver matched the description of the suspect. The deputy who reviewed the surveillance video confirmed the driver was the suspect.
The man, who said he was homeless and living out of his van, was arrested for larceny in a building. The maximum sentence for this crime is 4 years in prison.
He is held in the Leelanau County Jail.
