Defense Secretary Announces Army Reduction Proposal

WASHINGTON (AP) — Under a new proposal from the Secretary of Defense, the US Army could reach its lowest numbers since before World War II.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Monday he wants to reduce the size of the Army in the 2015 defense budget.
His plan is to reduce the Army to around 440,000 to 450,000 active duty members.
There were around 570,000 soldiers during the peak of the Afghan War.
Hagel announced other recommendations and outlined next year's defense budget Monday at the Pentagon.

“As we end our combat mission in Afghanistan, this will be the first budget to fully reflect the transition Department Of Defense is making after 13 years of war, the longest conflict in our nation's history.”
