Hook & Hunting: Youth Ice Fishing Tournament In Cadillac

If you want to get out and do some ice fishing in Northern Michigan, this weekend will be a great time to do it.

This is the Winter Free Fishing Weekend around the state.

Young anglers have a chance to do it for fun and prizes around lakes Cadillac and Mitchell.

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center at the Mitchell State Park, will host its Annual Youth Ice Fishing Tournament for youngsters 16 and under who'd like to get a taste of ice fishing this Saturday.

Show up at 10:00 AM, get some tips, check out some fishing gear if you need to, and get to the ice to fish.

Ed Shaw of the DNR says, “we'll teach 'em how to rig up their poles, and how to rig some tip-ups. And then we'll hit the ice and people can register for the tournament, and go wherever they want to fish, and we'll meet back here at 4:00 for a weigh in.”

Prizes will be awarded for biggest panfish, whether it's a bluegill, croppie, pumpkinseed or perch, and for big fish, which include pike and walleye.
