School District Celebrates First Student Accepted to West Point Academy
Today a crowd gave a standing ovation to George Thayer, a senior at Central Lake High School in Antrim County.
Thayer is the first in the district to be accepted to West Point.
With a graduating class of around 30 students, to say the school is proud is an understatement.
Thayer decided he wanted to go to school there when he was a Freshman, and he has been working towards his goal ever since.
His list of accomplishments is proof of his hard work. He has a schedule full of advanced classes, physics, calculus and foreign language. He also serves as President of the Student Council, a member of the National Honors Society, is Valedictorian and is a captain of the football team.
Thayer says being part of a small community has helped him learn how to be a leader, and has made it easier to learn how to help others.
He hopes his accomplishment shows classmates at Central Lake that they too, can dream big.
9&10's Alyssa Gambla and photojournalist Erin Malone spent some time with the student today to learn more about his accomplishments.
