UPDATE: Downing Formally Charged In Big Rapids Shooting Near FSU

Police and students at Ferris State University are glad a suspect is in custody after a shooting at the university Saturday morning.

Police tell us DeCory D. Downing is charged with attempted murder and having a firearm.

Downing faces seventeen charges for the shooting of Andre Powell on early Saturday morning outside a party at Venlo Place Apartments.

He is being charged with assault to intent to murder, felony firearm, and attempted murder along with fourteen other crimes.

Police have recovered a gun they believe was used in the shooting, but don't yet know a motive.
Also in court today was Shaionna Brown, who is being charged with being an accessory after the fact. Police say she helped Downing hide after the shooting.

Police say Downing is not a student at the university, and so far they cannot find a connection between the suspect and the student that was shot. They say it may have started with an argument off-campus.

Witnesses are still being questioned, and police say they believe there will be more charges later in the week.

The student who was shot has been released from the hospital.
