Proposed Indian River Race Track Stirs Controversy
A wooded area in Tuscarora Twp. in Cheboygan County could soon be the home to a new motor sports race track, hosting national events.
The park is a project proposed by Indian River native Mark Hall. He's now the president of Monster Energy Drinks.
The plan hopes to put a racetrack in for national shows, hosting 2-4 national motor cross events each year. The company's spokesperson says they hope to bring in up to $13 million for the county when they host these events.
Some locals hang signs saying “We Support Griswold Mountain RaceTrack.”
But some of those who own neighboring properties say they don't want a race track in their backyard.
What's causing a stir in the community is the zoning. The park is taking a big step and asking for the private property that sits near residential homes, to be changed to commercial property.
Some say the noise and amount of people near their home is something they would rather not deal with. Others say they would love to see something to bring in more revenue and more tourism to help the town of Indian River.
The race track zoning meeting was canceled Wednesday due to overcapacity. Mark Hall was not able to make the meeting either due to flight delays from California.
The meeting is rescheduled for January 29th at 7:00 PM in a larger venue.
