Study Proves Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Are At Most Risk for Environmental Problems
A 3-year study has found that Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are at the highest risk, for environmental problems.
Large sections of the Lake Michigan Shoreline also fit into the High Risk category.
Scientists released the study earlier today, including a detailed set of maps that list 34 environmental problems, such as invasive mussels, toxic pollution, and runoff.
Their report also shows where these problems are concentrated.
Lead researcher, David Allan from the University of Michigan says, the project will help State and Federal Officials set priorities, as they continue working on a restoration program for the Great Lakes.
Among the maps is a multicolored image of the entire region that pinpoints the best-and-worst-off areas, based on scientific reports, satellite maps, and a survey of experts.
It depicts the majority of Lake Ontario.
