8-Player Football State Final: Bellaire loses heartbreaker to Deckerville
Bellaire suffered a heartbreaking 14-12 loss to Deckerville in the 8-Player Football State Championship on Friday night in Greenville.
Trailing 14-6 with a minute to play in the game, Bellaire quarterback Zach Smith found Wes Villafane for a 52-yard touchdown to pull Bellaire with two points at 14-12. After the Eagles were denied the tying two-point conversion it seemed as though the game was over. But Bellaire would get one last chance.
Bellaire tried for, and recovered the onside kick, then made their way down inside the ten yard line with just six seconds left. With no timeouts left, the clock started on the snap. Bellaire ran an option play to the left side, but was stuffed just shy of the goal line. With no way to stop the clock, time ran out on Bellaire's season.
Final score: Deckerville 14, Bellaire 12.
