Cheboygan Deputies Presented Life Saving Medals

Two Cheboygan County deputies were rewarded today for their bravery stopping a man from killing himself in court.

Their actions saved Scotlund Stivers and avoided potential disaster at the Cheboygan County Courthouse on March 14th in Cheboygan.

Stivers was convicted of water pollution for three sunken tugboats in Cheboygan Bay.

After the sentencing, Stivers began complaining of heart pains and reached for his medication, which deputies Mike Raymus and Patrick Charboneau quickly realized was actually sodium cyanide.

This is only the second time in 25 years deputies have been given the medals.

Deputy Charboneau was also the recipient then in 2003 for saving a Michigan State Trooper from a heart attack.

9&10's Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Tony Zyber were at the ceremony and have more details.
