New Location Dedicated in Memory of Pere Marquette

The location where French missionary and explorer Pere Marquette died has been disputed for years.

Now there is a new site to add to the list.

Today, people gathered near Manmade Lake in Manistee to dedicate the site on the anniversary of his death.

Both Ludington and Frankfort also have markers.

Local researcher, Robert Adams, says Marquette was returning to Saint Ignace after becoming sick but never made it back.

Adams says he tried to figure out if Marquette died in Ludington or Frankfort but his research determined it was near Manistee.
