New Hovercraft Could Speed Up River Rescues

If you were near the Pine River Tuesday night you might have heard an interesting sound.

The Norman Township Fire Department in Manistee County was training with their new river rescue vehicle.

The hovercraft allows them to get into shallow, rocky parts of the Pine River. The department says it could save lives by speeding up search and rescue.

Money for the $41,000 hovercraft came from a public safety grant through the county.

They haven't had to use the hovercraft yet for an actual rescue. It can carry four people and has a spot to attach a backboard.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Tony Zyber have more on the new vehicle.
