The Soo Locks Opened Up Today
The Soo Locks, in Sault Ste. Marie, opened up today to start the 2012 shipping season.
They are opening up 12 hours ahead of schedule and this pleased many boat enthusiasts.
The Locks were supposed to open up at midnight tonight but the Army Corp of Engineers bumped that up to noon today.
Extremely mild weather and little ice on the Great Lakes gave the shipping industry a head start.
The first ship through was the 1,004 foot Mesabi Miner.
