T.C. native Casey Townsend drafted by Major League Soccer team
Traverse City native Casey Townsend has always wanted to play professional soccer. Today, Townsend fulfilled his life-long dream after getting drafted by Chivas USA as the #5 overall pick in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft.
Townsend was considered to be one of the best pure scorers available in the draft. He netted 17 goals during his senior year at the University of Maryland, earning second-team All-American honors.
“It was a very good feeling,” said Townsend of his draft day experience. “I had a lot of nerves built-up and when I heard my name called, I let a deep breath, tried to calm down a little bit, but overall really excited. I can't wait to get out there and start working.”
During his high school days at Traverse City West, Townsend racked-up 105 career goals, led the Titans to a state title and was the first player in Michigan history to be named Mr. Soccer twice.
