Ogemaw County Employees Face Weeklong Layoffs

To balance the budget, one local county will lay off every employee for a week this summer. The Ogemaw County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted for the layoffs to save the county more than $80,000. The employee lay-offs include the sheriff's department. The department will be without road patrols for five straight weeks as all available deputies will cover shifts in the jail. This leaves the county without protection and without a main source of income. Ogemaw County will still have limited state and city police coverage during the layoff. 9&10's Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Tyler Hampton spoke directly with the sheriff and other heads and have more details.
