Beach Bums stun Wild Things for comeback victory
TRAVERSE CITY – Trailing 9-2 in the seventh inning, the Traverse City Beach Bums mounted an improbable comeback that was capped by a three-run triple from Jose Vargas in the bottom of the eighth that gave Traverse City a 10-9 lead. Scott Mueller came on in the ninth, and nearly gave up a go-ahead two-run home run to Doug Thennis, but it was ruled foul by home plate umpire Ron Nordquist. Washington manager Darin Everson was ejected arguing the call with Nordquist. Mueller then retired Tim Battle to earn the save. Vargas was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Matt Brown went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Jeff Flagg hit his third home run of the season, a solo homer, in the second inning to give Traverse City an early 2-1 lead. Jeff Cinadr earned the win in relief for Traverse City by pitching a scoreless eighth inning. The Beach Bums now hit the road for a three-game set with the Windy City Thunderbolts before returning home for a three-game series with East Division leading Joliet.
