T.C.’s Hutchison wins Michigan Open with birdie on 18

WASHINGTON, MI – Traverse City's Randy Hutchison captured the 2011 Michigan Open at the Orchards Golf Club this afternoon in a thrilling finish. Hutchison held a 1-stroke lead over Battle Creek amateur Matt Thompson with three holes to play, but while Hutchison went par-par on 16 and 17, Thompson went birdie-birdie to take a 1-stroke lead heading into the final hole. Thompson was unable to hold onto that lead, though, finishing with a bogey on 18. That opened the door for Hutchison who calmly carded a birdie after sticking his approach shot to within 2-feet of the pin to leapfrog past Thompson to the Michigan Open title. Hutchison finished the tournament at 16-under while Thompson closed at 15-under. Petoskey amateur Joey Garber finished at -6. 2-time defending champion Ryan Brehm shot 3-under with 6-time champion Scott Hebert finishing at 1-over.
