Beach Bums win rain-shortened game, sweep series

TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse City Beach Bums scored just enough runs, and got in just enough innings to claim a 2-1 victory over the Washington Wild Things and sweep a three-game series at Wuerfel Park. The game was delayed due to lightning in the bottom of the fifth inning, and it was eventually called on account of the rainy weather in Traverse City. Jose Vargas opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single to left. Chase Burch drove in another run in the third to give the Beach Bums a 2-0 lead. Washington scored one run in the top of the fifth, but Nolan Shaffer was able to get a double play to end the inning, and escape with the lead. Shaffer had five strikeouts in five innings of work to earn the win. Traverse City now hits the road for six games in the next seven days.
