23 DNR Campgrounds Will Remain Open

Tourism is essential to northern Michigan, but budgets cuts almost shut down the one, last state forest campground in the Baldwin area. Business owners say that it would have been devastating. Whether people come to hunt, fish, or camp…They come to northern Michigan in the summer. It means big business for local shops and restaurants. The DNR agreed to keep these select campgrounds open through this summer only; but they still face an uncertain future. Doug Loomis, owner of “Ed's Sports Shop”, say's “A lot of people do come in here, whether they use THAT specific campground, or not, it's just a good place to enjoy camping.” At least for one more year, people in Lake County can look forward to a regularly busy summer season.
