Prescription Drug Theft Becoming A Problem In TC

Prescription pills are turning into a hot commodity in Traverse City and police said more people are going to extremes to get them. Police say someone broke into a Traverse City home on Monday to steal prescription medications. It happened in broad daylight, at 4 p.m. A neighbor saw the man breaking in, chased him down and pinned him until police arrived and arrested him. Police said he had three prescription bottles from the home in his pockets. But police said this is just the latest in a recent outbreak of prescription drug related crimes; people seem to be going to great lengths to get their hands on them. “Recently we’ve had break ins, we’ve had a armed robbery, we had assault complaints that are all drug related, the majority of them prescription drug related,” said Traverse City Police Department Captain Steve Morgan. They said as the city grows, things like this are getting to be a bigger problem. “As the population increases and we get more people inside the city, we’re going to have additional problems and apparently one of those problems is going to be related to prescription drugs,” Morgan said. Jennifer Profitt and Photojournalist Justin DePrekel talked to police and the neighbor who pinned the accused thief. They have the story.
