25th Anniversary of Chernobyl: Worst Nuclear Accident
Today, Ukraine is honoring the 25th anniversary of the world's worst nuclear accident at the Chernobyl plant. After an explosion and fire at a nuclear reactor 31 people were killed and radioactive chemicals were leaked into the air. The extent of damage and the exact death toll from Chernobyl is still not exactly known today. The accident sent a radioactive cloud over Europe which many scientists believe could be linked to much of Eastern Europe's environmental and biological problems. Today, officials at the United Nations rang the peace bell and observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the disaster. In Moscow the Russian President also honored those who risked their lives to clean up from the accident. For the latest headlines from around the world stay with 9&10 News.
