Boaters Help Swimmers in Trouble

A boat-load of good Samaritans helped swimmers in Manistee County. It happened on Sunday near Onekama, out in the channel between Portage Lake and Lake Michigan. Just as the boaters were heading in for the night, their kids asked them to make one more pass through the channel. That's when they heard cries for help coming from the pier. One man jumping off the pier had gone underwater. Two others who jumped in to help also found themselves struggling in the high waves. The passers-by in the boat were able to pull the three men to safety. Only one of the three men needed treatment from EMS workers once they got to shore. That man refused additional treatment at the hospital and was released. Responders say alcohol may have been a factor in the incident. 9 & 10'S Bill Froehlich and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson talked with the group that stopped to help.
