Red Wings sign ex-Colorado defenseman Ruslan Salei

The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Ruslan Salei to a one-year contract. Terms weren't announced. The 35-year-old was a first-round draft pick and No. 9 overall in 1996, taken by Anaheim. The Minsk, Belarus, native played in 842 games with the Ducks, Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche. He has 194 NHL career points on 43 goals and 151 assists, as well as 1,017 penalty minutes. Salei missed all but 14 games for Colorado last season because of a back injury. He captained the Belarus team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press.
