K-9 Helps Track Down Missing Toddler in Chippewa County

A terrifying 40 minutes for an Upper Peninsula family when their 17-month old daughter wandered off into the woods. Officers got the call about the missing toddler west of Sault Ste. Marie around 4:15pm Thursday and immediately brought in a police K-9 to help track her down. The dog, Britney, caught her scent and led officers down a path through the woods. Britney took them right to a safe, but scared, Melinah Meyer. It seems that a door was left open in the home, and Melinah wandered off. She was only wearing a summer dress and a diaper, no shoes. Police say that without the help of the K-9, Britney, the chance of a negative outcome would have been higher. The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police and Bay Mills Tribal Police all helped with the search. 9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Eric Lloyd have more details on this happy ending.
