Voters Say No to Fire Request

Voters gave mixed results in Suttons Bay and Bingham Townships, both in Leelanau County. They had a couple of issues on the ballot. The first was a proposal to create a Special Assessment District for the Fire and Rescue Authority, so the board could levy assessments as needed. It would have required public hearings, but not necessarily a public vote. Voters shot down that proposal in both townships. But voters did approve a 2.3 mill proposal for equipment and operational funding for the joint fire department. Voters in Suttons Bay approved the proposal while voters in Bingham rejected it, but the measure passed because the total number of “Yes” votes was enough for a majority.
