New, Old-Town Parking Deck Open for Business in TC

The wait is finally over — the Old Town District of Traverse City now has a brand new parking deck open for business. The city held a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday morning, calling it a milestone for the district. The parking deck is a joint venture between Traverse City and one of its leading companies, Hagerty Insurance. Hagerty agreed to add hundreds of jobs and expand its company, if the city would build a parking deck next door. “That was over and above what I think most companies and most businesses are willing to do but I think it was absolutely necessary for this to happen at all,” says Chris Bzdok, Traverse City Mayor. The parking deck with benefit Hagerty, but also the entire district. “This really has been a 20 to 30 year vision of consolidating parking in the Old Town area,” says Bryan Crough, Executive Director of the DDA. Construction on the deck wrapped up about two months earlier than expected, just in time for the Traverse City Film Festival. Right now only the first level of the deck is open, but the entire deck is expected to be open by next week. For the time being, parking in the new deck is free of charge. 9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Bill Froehlich take you to the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
