Safety Reminders After Three Children Hit by Cars in Mason County

Three children have been hit in separate accidents in the past few days in Mason County. In the most serious accident, rescuers airlifted a nine year-old boy in Scottville to a hospital Monday afternoon. The sheriff says a car hit him when he darted out into traffic near the library. Those accidents are propelling a safety reminder from police. During summertime in Northern Michigan, the roads are filled with cars and bicyclists, and sidewalks host pedestrians. Sometimes, kids just don't pay attention and can get hurt. The Mason County sheriff says kids should look both ways before crossing streets and use crosswalks, and he says parents should keep an eye on their kids. 9&10's Jodi Hathaway and photojournalist Joel Deaner have more from parents and police about how to keep kids safe.
