Campaign Aims to ‘Save Cheboygan Wrestling’
A group is rallying together, trying to save their Varsity Wrestling team. The Cheboygan School Board voted in May to eliminate the program from next year's budget. This would save the district $8,000 a year. Now, the coach, parents and wrestlers are trying to raise enough money to be self-funded. They developed a facebook group called “Help Save Cheboygan Wrestling” which already has more than 400 members. The coach agreed to volunteer his services, making their minimum goal $4,000. Even if they are able to raise the money, that does not guarantee the school board will reinstate the program. The superintendent says before they do, they would have to make sure this would not violate Title 9. According to MHSAA, this means the school has to have the same opportunities for boys and girls. The coach says if the school chooses not to reinstate the program, all checks would be sent back. To help, checks can be made out to: Cheboygan Wrestling.
