Experts: More Controlled Fires Equal Less Destructive Fires
With 95 percent of wildfires being started by people, fire experts say it's impossible to prevent them all. That's why they're calling for more prescription fires, or small, controlled burns in Michigan forests. Experts say tempering our forests to fire will help keep fires that do start from becoming too intense. They recognize the fear that may ignite in homeowners, but say there are simple steps to fire-proofing your property. They recommend clearing leaves, pine needles and any flammable mulch near your home, and pruning trees so that branches are six to eight feet above ground. Michigan fire season starts in April and typically runs into June, or until forests are lush and green again. Erika Waddell and photojournalist Justin DePrekel have the story.
