Ogemaw County Hospital Will Close OB Unit
In a matter of months, expecting mothers in Ogemaw County will no longer be able to deliver babies at a local hospital. The West Branch Regional Medical Center will end its OB services in July. The hospital says it can't afford to keep its OB unit open because of budget cuts. The hospital says another reason it's closing its OB unit is because of the lack of Medicaid funding and because they're not delivering as many babies as they used to. The hospital now joins a growing list of places forced to close their OB unit because of cutbacks. The hospital told Northern Michigan's News Leader their OB unit delivers on average 11 babies a month. Come time for the closure, expectant mothers will have to travel about an hour to the next closest hospital. 9&10's Cali O'Rourke and photojournalist Stephanie Adkins spoke with people who will be greatly affected by the closure.
