One Man Killed, One in the Hospital, One in Jail for Drunk Driving

Police say speed and alcohol proved to be a deadly mix on a sharp curve in Grand Traverse County. One man died and another is in serious condition from the single-car crash this weekend. Meanwhile, the man behind the wheel is in jail, accused of driving drunk and causing the tragic accident. The accident happened around 3 o'clock in the morning on Saturday in Long Lake Township in Grand Traverse County. Police say the 22-year-old driver lost control around a sharp curve. The car rolled and tossed out the two back seat passengers. One of the victims, 20-year-old Joseph Welburn, died from his injuries. The second victim, 19-year-old Scott Hepner, is in serious condition at a downstate hospital. “The driver admitted that he had been drinking, and one of the officers on the scene was able to determine that,” says Lt. Bryan Marrow with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office. Police are not identifying the driver until he is formally charged in court on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the group Mothers Against Drunk Driving says teaching kids this lesson early is the key. “As soon as I heard about it I began to pray for those families,” says Monica O'Brien, a volunteer for M.A.D.D. O'Brien knows how it feels because she lost her mother to a drunk driver seven years ago. Now she's trying to prevent accidents just like these. “This kind of stuff has to be taught to kids early,” she says. 9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson explain.
