Teenage Boy Accused of Groping Girl in School Stairwell

Police arrested a Traverse City student for a sex crime that happened in the school stairwell. The teenage boy is accused of pinning a girl to the ground and repeatedly groping her. Police say the 15 year-old girl managed to break free from the boy and was not injured. But it doesn't take away from the seriousness of the crime. “We don't know what his intentions were but the situation started escalating and obviously she was in fear,” says Capt. Tom Emerson with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department. Emerson says both students knew each other and were talking in the stairwell when suddenly the boy began assaulting her. The girl reported in the incident to the school later in the day. Administrators then immediately contacted police. “The first and foremost for us is the safety for all of our students,” says Chris Davis, TCAPS Spokesperson. “When ever you have an assault like this, the first thing we want to do is remove the threat from school.” Davis says most of the buildings in the district use security cameras to help deter this type of activity. Police tell us the stairway where the assault happened was not under surveillance. The school hopes the whole incident can be a learning lesson for students. “One thing I think it's going to show our students is there is no room in our schools to physically assault a student,” says Davis. “So if something happens the student will be removed from the school and not permitted to come back.” 9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson have the story.
