Northern Michigan tax preparers are catching their breath before the next big rush. With exactly two months until tax day, they say it's now the calm before the procrastinator storm. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service in Traverse City says there are some new and improved credits that people might be pleasantly surprised by. One is the Earned Income Credit — you can now get refunded for up to 3 children, instead of two. Michigan will also give you back 20 percent of that federal credit, instead of just ten percent. There's also a brand new credit — the Making Work Pay Credit — which can be up to $400 each, for you and your spouse. Tax preparers say the trickiest things this year are the two homebuyer credits. If you're applying for one, they recommend getting professional advice. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service on South Airport Road also has a Spanish speaking services available.
