Consumers Offered Rebates for Appliance Purchases

Consumers who buy new energy-efficient appliances may be eligible for rebates, thanks to a state program that's part of the Obama administration's economic stimulus plan. The $8.8 million Michigan Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program is expected to cover 120,000 water heaters, furnaces and dishwashers and applies to new appliances purchased after Wednesday. The program will last through year's end or when the money runs out. Rebates range from $25 on new energy-efficient dishwashers to $1,200 on solar water heaters. The program is divided between $6.6 million in cash back for washers, clothes washers and refrigerators, and $2.2 million for furnaces and water heaters. A reservation for a rebate can be made by phone or online and last two weeks. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press.
