No Transfer of Ownership; No More in Property Taxes

A Charlevoix County man will not have to pay more in property taxes after the death of a co-owner. The Michigan Court of Appeals says the taxable value of Kevin Klevorn's properties were illegally uncapped after his mother died in 2005. The Court says the value could not be uncapped because there was no new transfer of ownership. Klevorn says his property taxes had doubled. The Appeals Court relied on a December decision in a similar case from Charlevoix. Michigan assessors plan to appeal.
