Cyclists Pedal Safety Message for Last Minute Road Construction Changes
The Traverse City Commission is trying to get bike paths added to a construction project slated to begin in just a few months. The city is exploring a different route, after the cycling community said the plans don't do enough for their safety. MDOT says the city must go forward with the project as planned or start over and risk losing stimulus money. Mayor Chris Bzdok says the commission decided Monday night it will work with the chamber and legislators to try to work bike paths into the existing plans. He says if that does not work, the city has another option: finish construction as planned, then go back and add the bike lanes. Construction is expected to start in April and finish in June. 9&10's Jodi Hathaway and photojournalist Joel Deaner have more on the story.
