Law Enforcement Fighting New Prison Proposal

Prosecutors around the state are speaking out today against a proposal to let violent criminals out of prison early, all to save the state money. Northern Michigan law enforcement leaders say this proposal is wrong for victims and horrible for communities. If passed, prisoners would be eligible to earn “good time” credit, which would allow them to be released several years sooner. Studies show more than 50% of people released on parole commit new crimes. Instead of releasing prisoners early, local prosecutors want the state to explore why it costs Michigan 30% more than other state to house a prisoner. We'll have the details behind this proposal coming up tonight on Fox 32 News, including why law enforcement leaders call it a major injustice.
