The Kalkaska County Sheriff's Department has a new tool at their disposal, and it has four legs. Their newest team member is Roselynn, a one and half year old German Shepherd who responds to Polish commands. The sheriff's department was able to purchase him with an $18,000 federal grant. Sheriff Dave Israel says the K-9 will help his department work faster and more efficiently. The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie had one of the worst shipping seasons in recent history. The area engineer says shipping traffic is down around 33-percent, compared to the five-year average, the slowest it's been since 1938. Many expected a slow start as a result of the bad economy, but it did not pick up like many had hoped. The Soo Locks close for the season January 15. Downtown Traverse City will no longer have a dedicated police officer like its used to. The Traverse City Police Department decided to close its downtown sector office located in the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Road officers will still patrol and respond to calls downtown, but a community officer will no longer be stationed there.
