Hook & Hunting: Niles Man Catches New State Record Catfish

The DNR confirmed the catch of a new state record flathead catfish.

Rodney Akey of Niles caught a catfish that weighed 49.8 pounds and 45.7 inches long.

He caught the record fish on the St. Joseph River in Berrien County around 8 pm May 22nd.

The previous state record catfish was caught by Elmer Rayner of Hastings in 1943 on the Maple River in Ionia County.

Rayner's fish weighed 47.5 pounds and measured 44 inches.

To qualify for a state record, fish must exceed the current listed state record weight, and identification must be verified by a DNR fisheries biologist.
