Natural Resource Commission Decides to Continue Antler Point Restrictions

Posted: Updated:

After a survey of Northern Michigan hunters, the Natural Resource Commission has decided to keep antler point restrictions in play.

The NRC used data from a random sample of hunters in the northwest 12 region and found a 77 percent approval rating for the restrictions.

The APR, which restricts hunters from harvesting deer with less than three points on each antler, was set to expire but will now remain.

Representatives at the Department of Natural Resources say the regulation is what the majority of hunters agree is best.

“Folks like the idea of being able to see larger deer on the landscape. By making the younger male deer illegal to harvest, they're essentially living another season,” explained Katie Keen, DNR wildlife coordinator.

Another round of surveys will be performed next winter to determine if any other areas will enforce the restrictions.
