Wexford Co. Prosecutor Responds to Approval of Recreational Marijuana Petition

Posted: Updated:

You could see recreational marijuana legalization on the ballot next year, a petition was approved in the effort to bring it to a vote.

The Board of State Canvassers approved the form of the petitions Thursday.

Now ballot committees must get more than 250,000 valid voter signatures to put the bills before lawmakers.

But lawmakers are not expected to act on the marijuana measure, instead letting it go to a statewide vote in 2018.

Some local law enforcement say there's a big difference between recreational and medical use, and that voters should make sure they know the difference before casting a ballot.

“Find out what marijuana is, what it looks like. Marijuana is not necessarily what people think it is. It's not just a rolled up cigarette. The most important thing to remember is that voters themselves must be educated. They must go out and do the research,” Jason Elmore, Wexford Co. Prosecutor said.

A new ballot committee has started to oppose the marijuana legalization drive.
