Local Middle Schoolers Rank First, Second in Video Contest For Stroke Awareness

A few talented students from Traverse City have been recognized for their creativity, all while performing a public service.

Two groups of Traverse City East middle schoolers ranked first and second in a PSA competition sponsored by Munson Healthcare.

Along with bragging rights, the young videographers have earned some cash prizes for their school's media program.

The contest is part of an effort to raise awareness of stroke danger and symptoms.

“I think it's important for students to become aware of stroke and stroke symptoms for many reasons. One is that for the rest of their lives will now be able to remember this information. And in the process of working on these videos they're educating their parents, they educate the other students they're working with,” Kersti Bruining, neurologist, Munson Medical Center said.

I think it's important to know your audience, and try to capture what they think is interesting. And you also don't want it to be to the point where it's not educational,” Hunter Hawes, first place winner said.
