Detroit Federal Judge to Hold Hearing in VW Emissions Cheating Scandal

Posted: Updated:

Volkswagen and the U.S. government are seeking approval on a $2.8 billion criminal penalty against the German automaker following a diesel emissions cheating scandal.

A federal judge is scheduled to hold a hearing Friday in Detroit.

It comes six weeks after the automaker pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

The judge had asked for more time to consider the plea deal and fine negotiated between VW and the U.S. justice department.

VW has admitted that nearly 600,000 diesel cars sold in the U.S. were programmed to trigger pollution controls during testing, and to turn them back off while on the road.
