Republican Newcomer Jack Bergman Wins 1st Congressional District - Northern Michigan's News Leader

Republican Newcomer Jack Bergman Wins 1st Congressional District Seat

Michigan is sending nine Republicans and five Democrats to represent them in Congress --- and the first congressional seat winner is Republican Jack Bergman.

“Today is a victory for our team. It's a victory for conservatives. It's a victory for the first district. It's a victory for Republicans,” Bergman said.

Republican newcomer Jack Bergman defeated Democrat Lon Johnson -- and is the winner of the first congressional seat.

The district covers the entire Upper Peninsula and part of the northern Lower Peninsula.

“It's clear the race isn't going in our direction. It's going in Jack's,” Johnson said. “And we have a responsibility to come together now, and Jack has won this race, and I wish him good well.”

The seat was previously held by Republican Dan Benishek.

Bergman says he looks forward to fighting for conservative values in congress.

“I will be a conservative in Congress. I will make sure the next Congress does finally repeal Obamacare,” Bergman said. “Your second amendment is protected on my watch.”

Michigan Republicans kept the nine seats they held previously in congress.

Johnson conceded last night and encouraged his supporters to work together.

“Our organization and efforts need to continue so that their lives will look good, so that we can work with our leaders to build a solution,” Johnson said.

Bergman's planning to celebrate his win locally today.

“I'm looking forward to rotary right here in this building at noon because of the fact that there's a lot of people in this area who supported us from the beginning of this. So I get a chance to start tomorrow morning by saying ‘thanks,’” Bergman said.
