Petoskey Police Investigating Purse Theft, Searching for Suspect

Posted: Updated:
Caught on camera: police need your help catching a purse thief.

"This doesn't happen here and when it does we get angry... and will find them," said Then & Now Consignment owner, Tracy Nehrkorn.

A purse thief... Caught on camera.

Now and Then Antiques and Consignment says a woman stole a $2000 handbag.

She waited until the owner left to make her move.

"Within half an hour we noticed it was missing, rewound our cameras and saw her taking the paper out, folding, putting it in her bag and immediately leaving our store and had someone waiting for them," said Nehrkorn.

Luckily... Great surveillance video should help police find the thief.

They say retail fraud is no joke

John Calabrese, Director of Public Safety said, "There are different levels of retail fraud and some of it has to do with the value of items stole, this is obviously a serious crime. Business owners want their property back and we don't want people stealing from local business."

They hope this video... Can return the bag to the owner.. And bring this woman in.

"We're a resort community so we have a transient population. We hope somebody out in the community will say I know who that is and will call and let us know," said Calabrese.

"We've been stolen from before and caught them so were hopeful we'll have that bag back by the end of the week," said Nehrkorn.

The handbag is a B. May brand ostrich purse.

The suspect is described as a white woman, blonde hair, about 5'1" to 5'5" tall, about 150 to 180 pounds. She was last seen wearing light-colored flip-flops, white shorts, yellow shirt, reading glasses and was carrying a yellow purse. The suspected vehicle is described as a white GMC Acadia or Chevy Traverse.

If you have any information about this theft or can identify the woman in the pictures, please contact the Petoskey Department of Public Safety at 231-347-2500.
