Morales Charged with Open Murder, Manslaughter in Benzie County

Posted: Updated:
Northern Michigan's News Leader was in a Benzie County courtroom as a Chicago woman was charged again in the death of her baby.

Alyce Morales gave birth to a little girl at a campsite in Beulah last July.

Last month, it was agreed that Morales would be re-charged today after the defense said both parties reached a resolution that could include a plea deal or charges being dropped.

But today, she was charged again with open murder and a manslaughter charge was added. Morales pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Police say Morales gave birth alone in a tent and no one knew she was pregnant.

The baby died several hours later at the hospital.

The medical examiner ruled at the time the baby had skull fractures, and did not die from natural causes.
