Baldwin Community Schools Receives Grant for Balanced Calendar

Posted: Updated:

Baldwin Community Schools will soon make a big change that will affect when students are in and out of school.

The Lake County district is moving to a balanced calendar during the 2015-2016 school year. A six week summer break with more shorter and frequent breaks throughout the school year is what the balanced calendar will consist of.

The move comes after the district received a $750,000 grant from the state to prepare their building for the new schedule. Back in April, the district held a meeting to discuss the possibility of going to a balanced calendar and applied for the grant. Initially, the district did not win the money, but hard work by legislators paid off, and the grant was recently approved.

"If we need to make upgrades to our transportation we can do that, if we need to make upgrades to our buildings we can do that. Specifically, retrofitting the building for air conditioning," said Superintendent Stiles Simmons.

The superintendent says going to a balanced calendar is a much needed change and the district is anticipating huge rewards from an increase in student achievement to a decrease in staff absenteeism.

According to the superintendent, athletics will not be affected by the balanced calendar.

9&10's Breelynn Martin and Jacob Johnson spoke with the superintendent.
